December 2021 | Ryne's Ramblings
Hey it's me, Ryne, the senior from Texas just trying my best! Currently researching space tech applications and wanting to improve myself.
TKS Global Session Podcast🎤
For TKS, we had a GLOBAL SESSION 🌎this month, which means everyone that attends TKS gets to join a zoom call and have one big session together! It was so much fun seeing people around the world and getting to know them, as well as having engaging activities throughout to encourage the sense of community.
One of the things we did was make a podcast. We got into groups of four, where our topic was to choose a quote and discuss it. Our group chose the quote “We suffer more in imagination than in reality” - Seneca💯. Shoutout to Daniel, Bhargavi, and Andrew for making this with me, it was super insightful! (Sorry for the echo and the noises in the background!)
My First Mile to get Under 10 Mins👟
Finally, after starting in September, I got my first mile in under 10 minutes!🏃♂️ I’ve gotten it three times in a row so far, and am super grateful that I made this much progress. I know it isn’t something super amazing, but getting into the single digits really made me feel that I’m actually making a bit of progress. Now the main thing to work on is consistency. There are some days where I just feel like walking or not going at all. But that’s only like a day or two, and then I’m back to running.
First Step of Focus: Learn ✔️
“Hey didn’t you already write this?”. Yes, that’s true BUT I added way more pieces of information from research papers and from the hundreds and hundreds of tabs opened that might’ve destroyed my laptop.😬
With a bit more of an understanding of antimatter, there’s still a lot left I have yet to understand, so I’ve contacted a NASA employee, that’s part of a team that focuses advanced concepts (NIAC), to understand the topic further. In addition to that, I’ve contacted 2 others from NASA to expand my network and get to know them better.🌌
Second Step of Focus: Apply - In Progress ✍️
The next part of my Focus project is Apply, which is where I create a simulation or perform a hands-on experiment.
I’ve researched many ideas that I could’ve done, such as an ion thruster, CO2-powered rockets, 2 stages Hydrogen-Oxygen and more🚀. Some of these were a bit too simple, like the first two, whereas the 2 stages Hydrogen-Oxygen had A LOT of materials and looked pretty challenging(maybe next time though! I’ll add it on my to-do list).
But one that caught my eye was a Quadrupole Ion Trap, which is similar to what’s used to trap antihydrogen at CERN, in experiments known as GBAR (Gravitational Behavior of Antimatter at Rest). It has multiple components to it, such as 3D printed materials, working with circuits, and using electric fields🤯. Go and check it out!
Music of the month🎵
Enjoy your stay in San Francisco! One of my favorite songs that I found that’s great for just chilling at night. Get yourself some vanilla ice cream🍦 or Milano®Cookies🍪 and jam out to this.
Quote of the month 💯
Knowing is not enough, we must apply. Willing is not enough, we must do. ~ Bruce Lee
One of the things I usually do is overthink and plan too much. I read many articles and watch a lot of videos that show you how to improve yourself, and even take notes on them so that I can look at them later📝. But one thing I’ve been struggling with is actually implementing the habits.
I’m always caught up with trying to find the perfect plan, the perfect habits to implement, and it’s worse when it’s combined with having an endless amount of content and pieces of information that I don’t know which one to follow and prioritize.
Then I’m stuck thinking too much about which one to choose, which is known as analysis paralysis😵. I have to get in the mindset that this is a trial and error kind of situation, I just have to keep on trying to see which one fits and which one doesn’t, and that kinda scares me. But I’m going to make this work, for every problem there’s a solution.
Next Month🧭
Find someone to hold me accountable 🤝
Finish Apply step ✔️
Have meetings with people in the space industry👨🏽🚀
Set a habit of personal deadlines, and slowly include more habits from there 📌
Yall thank you so much for reading or skimming to the end. I’m very grateful for everyone that opens these up, whether it’s your first time, or you’ve been here for a while. So thanks again everyone!❤️
In the spirit of the holidays right now, I want to give everyone a gift, ones that I think are pretty cool once I found them. So happy holidays everyone!✨
